The Focus is a chance for freelance journalist members of www.journalistdirectory.com to tell colleagues, editors and PRs (in our separate newsletter from www.featuresexec.com) a bit more about their work and experience. If you’d like to take part email us on news@dwpub.com.

This week (pictured, right): Sasa Jankovic

What do you write about?

I’m basically a pen for hire. I write about health, beauty, pharmacy and lifestyle topics for the national and trade press, pharmaceutical journals, and consumer blogs and websites; I work as a copywriter for creative agencies and businesses; and I do big stacks of proofreading for government agencies and also for Phd and other students.

What’s the most memorable work you’ve done?

At the moment it’s the relief of just having completed my first book, called ‘Applying for a job – the essential guide’ (ISBN 9781861440990) which is published by Need2Know books in July. It was a bit of a shock having to produce tens of thousands of words instead of a short feature, but you’ve got to challenge yourself from time to time, right?

What interview or feature would you love the chance to do?

I’d love to be a fly on Vivienne Westwood’s studio wall. I’ve been a fan of hers since I was old enough to dress myself, and I (literally) eBayed off most of my wardrobe four years ago to raise the money to have my wedding dress made to measure at Vivienne Westwood. Best clothing purchase I ever made.

How would you pay the bills if you weren’t a journalist?

My only transferrable skills are that I’m a fast typist and very nosey, so what does that qualify me for?

If we gave you £1,000, how would you spend it?

If I am being sensible then it’d have to go on new kit for my office. If I’m not then it would go on more books and magazine subscriptions, and more shelves to put them all on.

What books are on your bedside table, magazines in your bag, or blogs on your screen?

I know it sounds like a cop out but there are too many to mention. I’m currently finishing Stieg Larsson’s ‘Millennium’ trilogy, which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed; plus I’m reading blogs and other sites about fitting out campervans, because I’ve just bought one and want to convert it myself; and then there are all the fashion books – Scott Schuman’s ‘The Sartorialist’ is also a favourite so I’m hoping he’s working on another one.

Get in touch with this journalist via the Freelance Journalist Directory: www.journalistdirectory.com/journalist/mzAg/Sasa-Jankovic/.

Tell us a bit about your title…

hospitalityenews.com is primarily visited by professionals in the Irish hospitality industry including hotel general managers and department heads, chefs, restaurant owners and managers, industrial and institutional caterers and Irish hotel managers working abroad. The total of regular visitors to the site is in excess of 5,000.

What stories are you most interested in covering?

We cover current news on hotel and restaurant developments, Irish and international tourism news, catering equipment, food and drink and personnel appointments.

Do you use freelance contributions, and if so, are they for any particular section/type of work?

Not as yet – but we plan to do so as the site and revenue develops.

What interests you most about your job?

A constantly evolving and dynamic Irish hospitality industry and feedback from our site visitors.

Where have you worked previously, and how did you end up in your current position?

I became a journalist in 1959 at the age of 19, worked for local and national newspapers, became a business journalist in 1969 and editorial director of a magazine publishing company in 1972. I edited a wide range of magazines, wrote thousands of articles, several books, did some PR work, wrote film scripts and retired in 2005. I then did speech writing and freelance work and launched hospitalityenews.com in March 2010.

Do you like freelance journalists to get in touch with you directly to pitch ideas? And if so, how?

We are always open to ideas – contact me by e-mail at fcorr100@fgmail.com

Name the three most important attributes that make a freelance journalist stand out for you:

Enthusiasm, accuracy, reliability and ‘making that extra call’.

If you can, tell us about the best approach you’ve seen from a freelance – and the worst.

Best was a young freelance who sat in my office one day and would not leave until she was hired. Worst was a journalist who took on a major project and never delivered a line for the two pages of a magazine we had held for the story.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given?

From my first editor on the ‘Limerick Weekly Echo’ – ‘News is what people don’t want you to print. Everything else is advertising’.

The Focus is a chance for freelance journalist members of www.journalistdirectory.com to tell colleagues, editors and PRs (in our separate newsletter from www.featuresexec.com) a bit more about their work and experience. If you’d like to take part email us on news@dwpub.com.

This week (pictured, right): Adrian Bridgwater

What do you write about?

My focus is specifically on cross-platform software application development. While this can encompass security, databases, web design & development, mobile and even games – I will always be more interested in a hard-core code-level story that is relevant to programmers and software engineers. While I don’t spend too much time at the command line myself, I am looking for deep dive content.

Where are we likely to see your work?

ZDNetUK, Computer Weekly, Web Designer, Linux User and Developer, The H-Online and one or two American sites.

What’s the most memorable work you’ve done?

I got to write for the Wall Street Journal a couple of times. Yes it’s in a frame on my wall, I admit it. I also enjoyed interviewing Michael Dell, not so much because of what he said, more to have just met a CEO with such presence. I have met a bunch of other CEOs and some of them are just regular guys who hang out in T-shirts and jeans; Dell does the whole double cuff shirts and Saville Row suit thing.

How would you pay the bills if you weren’t a journalist?

Oceanographer or forest ranger. When I retire I will be combining these two skills by opening a shark fishing and woodworking school in the Bahamas.

If you could time travel, what time would you go to?

I would go back to the 15th Century and be a Conquistador in Spain to join the adventurers and soldiers of that era. I think I like the swords. Plus there would be plenty of red wine and pork.

What books are on your bedside table, magazines in your bag, or blogs on your screen?

I am reading Bill Bryson’s Dictionary for Writers and Journalists and John Simpson’s Not Quite Worlds End.

Magazines: I am reading Web Designer.

Blogs on screen: always my own I’m afraid.
