Tips for freelancers with Mike Magee of TechEye

16 July, 2010

Editor focus

The Focus is a chance for editors listed on www.featuresexec.com to tell colleagues, editors and PRs (in our separate newsletter from www.featuresexec.com) a bit more about their work and experience. If you’d like to take part email us on news@dwpub.com.

This week (pictured, right): Mike Magee

Why did you launch TechEye? Tell us all about it?

We saw a niche in the market for a business orientated online IT site that would also feature investigative journalism.

What makes you different from the other tech news sites?

I’ve already launched two successful online sites, the register and the inquirer – we can do it again, but with more of a business than a tabloid angle.

Do you use freelance contributions, and if so, are they for any particular section/type of work?

Yes – reviews, interviews, news stories.

What interests you most about your job?

Its immediacy, its variety and the buzz of getting a good story.

Do you like freelance journalists to get in touch with you directly to pitch ideas? And if so, how?

Yes – email.

Name the three most important attributes that make a freelance journalist stand out for you:

Reliability, consistency and enthusiasm.

If you can, tell us about the best approach you’ve seen from a freelance…

I do like direct contact, someone just coming up to me and pitching over a beer or three.

Find out more about TechEye.
